Planning, opening, and maintaining an orphanage is by itself, a major project. Add to it the challenges of doing so in the poorest country in the western hemisphere, and you will quickly find that much needed outside help is often hard to come by. It is with the moral, financial, and spiritual support of many such outsiders, that Jean-Louis and the orphanage have been able to make a difference in the lives of so many of God's less fortunate children and for this, he thanks them all. While we can not possibly list every individual or group, below are some of those that have contributed and had a major impact on the orphanage and its continued progress.
Haiti-Not-Hilfe [Haitian Relief] : This Germany-based organization founded by Dr. Thomas Diehl provides sponsorship support for many of the children at Maison Fortuné Orphanage.
Scottish International Relief : Through its Mary's Meals program this Scotland-based organization founded in 1992 by Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow helps provide a daily hot meal for the many non-resident children who attend the Fortuné Jean-Louis Primary School located on the orphanage campus.
Catholic Church of St. Mark : Located in Virginia Beach,
Virginia, the Catholic Church of St. Mark has been providing support Maison Fortuné Orphanage for some time.
In September of 2001 they became the first parish to enter into an official twinning relationship with the orphanage.
The parish provides not only financial support, but also gifts of clothing and other supplies. Members of the parish
also travel to Haiti to visit the orphanage a few times a year and lend a hand with the children and even do some odd
jobs around the orphanage as needed.
Catholic Church of St. Therese : Located in Chesapeake, Virginia, the Catholic Church of St. Therese also has a twinning relationship with the orphanage. Members visit the orphanage and also make donations of money, clothes and other items.
Maison Fortuné Orphanage Foundation : Through a strategic partnership, several supporting religeous
orginizations have established the Maison Fortuné Orphanage Foundation. This non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation
was founded to provide among other things, logistical and financial support to the orphanage. To help ensure the maximum
benefit to the orphanage, all Foundation Board members serve on a volunteer basis, and receive no compensation for their
services. The board meets once a month to discuss the current needs of the orphanage and what the member organizations
can do to best help Jean-Louis and the staff meet these needs. Currently each of the following five organizations
(4 parishes and 1 school) has members on the Foundations Board of Directors.
Prince of Peace Parish (Chesapeake VA)
St. Mark Parish (Virginia Beach VA)
Bishop Sullivan Catholic High School (Virginia Beach VA)
St. Stephen Martyr Parish (Chesapeake VA)
Church of St. Therese Parish (Chesapeake VA)
As a service to the Foundation and to assist those that are interested, we have made a copy of the Foundations most

Those that are interested may also
request a hard-copy

It was with the help of Greg Hanson at Aqua-Sun International that the orphanage was able to acquire a solar/battery
powered water purification system. This system has enabled to provide the children with safe, clean drinking water right
at the orphange. This water purification system was very instrumental in helping to improve the childrens health and
reducing the number of illnesses related to previously contaminated water supplies. Greg and his company have continued
to provide much needed assistance providing replacement filters and other supplies at a reduced cost.
RRMM Architects As one of the leading Virginia architectural design firms, RRMM still found time in their busy schedule to donate their services and provide not only the site plans for the Maison Fortune Orphanage boys campus, but also the architectual design and drawings for the new School bulding, dormitory and Admin building. More recently they have again offered their services providing site plans for the new girls campus as well as the architectural design and plans for the new dorm and Admin building which we hope to begin construction on later in 2005. We would like to thank John Maddux and all those at RRMM for their continued support.
Brother Cosmas Rubencamp : Brother Cosmas has been visiting Haiti for more than fifteen years and played a major role in making it possible for Jean-Louis to attend Virginia Tech. As a member of the Xaverian Brothers religious community and as Executive Secretary of the Haitian Commission for the Diocese of Richmond, Virginia, Brother Cosmas has dedicated much of his life to those in need. As a Maison Fortune Orphanage Foundation Board member, he also helps to coordinate orphanage finances in the States.
Brother Harry Eccles : For over 14 years Brother Harry has been living in Haiti in a small village near Hinche called
Pandiassou. It was Brother Harry who taught Jean-Louis how to speak English prior to his attending Virginia Tech in the states.
Brother Harry is also Jean-Louis mentor and best friend. He continues his work in Haiti as director of a house for young
Haitian men currently attending universities in Port-au-Prince with the support of the Xaverian Brothers.

Jonathan Dohanich : A post-graduate from Penn State University, and a member of their Catholic
community's "Project Haiti Club" Jonathan was also a volunteer with the Xaverian Brothers. Jonathan was in Pandiassou, Haiti
for a little over a year, during which he spent much time assisting Jean-Louis with logistics. Even after returning to the
states in November of 2001, Jonathan and his family continue to to be key supporters and have raised much needed funds for
the orpahanage.

Chris Roberson : A graduate from Penn State University, from Williamsville NY, Chris
served as a Xaverian volunteer in Haiti during 2001-2002. Since then Chris has been involved in
fund raising for the orphanage.

David Peterson : David is from St. Edward's Parish in Richmond, Virginia and is a 2002 graduate of Mt. St. Mary's College, in Emmitsburg, Maryland. He was recently in Haiti for a year as part of the Richmond Diocese "Volunteer Ministries in Haiti" program. The program allows individuals from twinned parishes in Virginia to share their skills with parishes or other institutions in Haiti. Dave spent much of this time helping out at the orphanage before returning home to the states in August 2003.
Mike McGeehin : From Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Mike is a 2002 graduate from Pennsylvania State University and has visited on two seperate occasions in the past as part of Penn States Catholic Community "Project Haiti Club. Mike again visited the orphanage as part of the "Volunteer Ministries in Haiti" program. After spending a year there during his last trip (much of this time spent helping out at the orphanage), Mike returned to the states in August 2003.
Brother Pete Mahooney : Brother Pete had also been living in Pandiassou, near Hinche.
During this time, Brother Pete was very influential in getting both supplies and funds for the
orphanage.

Penn State University - Project Haiti Club We would like to thank the members of PSU Project Haiti Club members who through-out the year take the time to not only raise awareness about the orphanage and other orginizations in Haiti, but also organize many fund-raiser to support these same orginizations. Once a year members of the club then travel to Haiti to help at the orphanage and other locations in the Hinch and Pandiassou area.
Catholic Diocese of Richmond : Since 1984 the Catholic Diocese of Richmond in Virginia has had a "twinning" relationship with the Diocese of Hinche in Haiti. Through their Haiti Outreach program the Richmond Diocese has been very instrumental in providing much needed support to the orphanage as well as many other programs through-out Haiti. Working with Fonkoze (a Haitian organization) they were able to establish two microbanks in Haiti which use a micro-credit lending technique very popular through-out third world countries known as "Solidarity Group Lending". These micro-loans are most often given to street vendors who are often considered the backbone of the Haitian economy. The Diocese also publishes a monthly Maison Fortune Orphanage Newsletter offering highlights of recent news from the orphanage.
Thomas Gorman Photography We would like to thank Tom Gorman of Chesapeake, VA for providing us with many great photos. During a visit to Haiti and the orphanage he took many wonderful photos including most of those of the girls which appear in our childrens photo gallery. Tom has also provided other photos of Haiti as well as certificates for photo sessions at his studio which are auctioned at the St Mark parish silent auction fundraiser each year to benefit the orphanage.
